Top 7 Tips to Protect Your Job-site and Equipment from Storm Damage
1. If winds are expected to exceed 35MHP, lower all aerial equipment to prevent tip overs. This includes boom lifts, scissor lifts, cranes, excavators, and telescopic forklifts.
2. Move heavy equipment to higher ground to prevent flooding. High winds can break windows and cause cosmetic damage but flooding, especially if salt water, is an even bigger concern for electrical components, batteries, engine parts, hydraulic hoses and more.
3. Clean up and remove all construction debris. When materials and debris become air born due to high winds, they can cause severe damage to property, vehicles, and anything else in its path. Make sure to tie down or tarp if materials cannot be relocated.
4. Park heavy equipment away from power lines, trees, and anything else that can topple over and cause serious damage during heavy winds.
5. Store gas, diesel, paint and other chemicals above ground and away from flood prone areas so they are not carried away into local streams, storm drains, and residences.
6. Check drains for blockages like sand and leaves and test water pumps prior to the start of the storm in case of severe flooding.
7. Have a portable generator on hand in case of power loss. An emergency generator can help power your emergency lighting, water pumps, and other essential equipment.
